What Are Dental Sealants and How Do They Protect Your Oral Health?

Dental sealants are a preventive treatment designed to help protect teeth from cavities and decay. At ABN Family Dental in Aurora, we offer sealants for children, teens, and adults as part of a complete preventive care plan. Sealants are most often recommended for children as their permanent molars come in, but patients of any age with deep grooves in their teeth may benefit from this protective coating.

What are Dental Sealants and Who are They For?

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings made from a tooth-coloured resin material. They are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where grooves and pits are most likely to collect food and bacteria, and it takes only a few minutes to apply. These areas can be difficult to clean with regular brushing, especially for young children.

Once applied, the sealant forms a smooth barrier over the enamel, making it easier to keep the tooth clean and helping to prevent plaque buildup and cavity formation.

Who Should Get Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are often recommended for children and teenagers as their first and second permanent molars erupt, typically between the ages of 6 and 14. Applying sealants during this time can help protect the teeth through the cavity-prone years of childhood and adolescence.

However, dental sealants are not just for children. Adults with healthy molars and no decay or fillings in the chewing surfaces may also benefit from sealants, particularly if their back teeth have deep grooves or are at higher risk for cavities.

How Dental Sealants are Applied

Applying dental sealants is a quick process that can usually be done in just one visit. The steps typically include:

Cleaning and drying the tooth

Applying a special solution to roughen the surface slightly for better bonding

Rinsing and drying the tooth again

Brushing the liquid sealant onto the tooth surface

Using a curing light to harden the material
